From Hobby to Acceptance Letter
Finding pages full of statistics about perfect test scores, high GPAs, and impressive extracurriculars can put a damper on any eager college applicant's excitement. But I believe that you can get into your dream college ââ¬â even without finding a cure for cancer. It will take everything you have, but if you have passion and determination, you can achieve the seemingly impossible. People are going to say that to get into your top school you need to focus on your grades, your SAT or ACT scores, and your extracurriculars. While I agree with that, I also believe that most people are rejected because they do not have the single most important aspect of an application: a theme. What I mean by that is, essentially, a passion. More and more colleges are looking for proof of a student's thoroughness and dedication, and by creating a central theme to weave through your extracurriculars and essays, you can give those admissions officers what they want while still staying true to yourself. To begin, first think of your passion. Everybody has at least one, whether it is something as popular as soccer, as seemingly trivial as watching Netflix, or as simple as drinking coffee. Ask yourself what you would spend all your free time doing if you were given the choice, or what you would research and blog about if you had to choose one topic. Then comes the task of finding ways to infuse your passion into your activities at school. For those whose focus is a sport, getting involved is easy. But say your passion is more obscure, like watching Netflix (and when I say that, I mean you should be a genuine Netflix connoisseur). There are many ways to get involved at school, but if your passion is unusual you may have to be creative. Taking advantage of clubs or the student paper is a good place to start. School is an easy platform to find leadership opportunities. This last step is the most important one, because it is where you can truly take your theme outside the box and st and out to college admissions officers. You need to channel your passion into an extracurricular activity. Going back to my Netflix example, you could find a magazine or website that reviews TV shows and movies and become a writer for it. Or you could join a children's mentorship program, helping kids find television shows that are educational and fun. You could start a film festival for charity, or find some sort of internship related to media. Create your own TV show, even, or volunteer at a retirement home and help residents find their next favorite television program. The most impressive accomplishments happen when someone has true passion and shows dedication to it. Putting your own thematic twist on typical volunteer activities is how you will really impress those college admissions officers, because what you are doing is showing them that you are so passionate about your topic that you will find any possible way to share it with others. And whatever decision you get from y our dream college, if you have worked to develop your passion, you will never look back with regret. You may even have changed the world with something you truly love.

An Analysis Of The Indomitable Spirit Of Man In Henry...
Henry Ford, the automobile magnate, once stated that the quot;world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onwardâ⬠(Daily Quotations Network). Man has always struggled with uncontrollable aspects of his environment, but his ability to overcome these seemingly indomitable obstacles has earned recognition from numerous classical writers and poets, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. ââ¬Å"One of the real American Poets of yesterdayâ⬠(Montiero, Preface), Longfellow elaborates on manââ¬â¢s perpetual struggle with life and nature in his poetry. In ââ¬Å"A Psalm of Life,â⬠ââ¬Å"The Village Blacksmith,â⬠and ââ¬Å"The Rainy Day,â⬠Longfellow explores many facets of manââ¬â¢s unyielding will.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦His health began to fail in 1881, and he died of peritonitis on March 24, 1882. A bust of Longfellow was mounted in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey in 1884 as a tribute to the outstanding writer. He is the only non-British author to be awarded this honor (Williams 21). Longfellow was quot;the first of the front-ranking American poets of his time to go, and his death was widely recognized as marking the beginning of the end of an eraquot; (Wagenknecht 19). A popular poet, Longfellow deals quot;with important subjects clearly and forthrightly while adopting a frankly didactic and inspirational tonequot; (Allabeck 118). He uses simple language; he once stated that if a poet quot;wishes the world to listen and be edified, he will do well to choose a language that is generally understoodquot; (Allabeck 119). Although only a quot;second class poet, quot; his ability to capture his readers interest and appeal to their emotions has made Longfellow a staple figure in the hearts of his followers (Hearn 485). He writes to inspire and improve society using quot;metrical regularityquot; and quot;careful rhymequot; to emphasize his idea that life is meaningful (Allabeck 118). The rhythmic cadence in quot;A Psalm of Life, quot; quot; The Village Blacksmith, quot; and quot; The Rainy Dayquot; suggests that the lives of men are characterized by

I went down to the dining room for dinner. The aroma of freshly prepared sausage, rolls, baked potatoes, and mixed vegetables filled the air. A typical family dinner. However, I enjoyed this meal, not at home, but with my German host family. ââ¬Å"Komm,â⬠said my host mother, ââ¬Å"Abendessen ist fertig.â⬠In English, this means, ââ¬Å"Come. Dinner is finishedâ⬠, meaning ready to eat. I gladly took my seat to enjoy the meal with the Van Heusdens. My exchange partner, Anabel, is the oldest of three siblings. Her brothers are Pieter and Vincent. Pieter helped make the sausage, or Wurst, while Anabel and her mother prepared the broccoli, carrots, and other vegetables. During my three weeks in the Van Heusden home, I enjoyed many meals like this. However, I not only learned about German traditions and customs. I learned more about people in general. Not only did I live with my host family, but I accompanied them to visit their relatives in Belgium, and I went to school with Anabel. We will write a custom essay sample on Adding to the Quilt or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I lived their life. Another girl from the exchange and I prepared a presentation on American Nursery Rhymes, which we later presented to German schoolchildren in the fourth and fifth grade. The children enjoyed learning the rhymes and recognized many of them, since there are German equivalents. However, the most enlightening part of my trip came after we presented. ââ¬Å"Does anyone have any questions for us?â⬠I asked. Some of the childrenââ¬â¢s questions surprised us. ââ¬Å"Do you like shopping?â⬠ââ¬Å"What do you do for fun?â⬠ââ¬Å"What is school like in America?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you go to New York City a lot?â⬠These were just a few of their questions, and I struggled to answer them. I looked to my partner, but she did not know how to reply either. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s kind of the same as here,â⬠I answered weakly. I really could not see any drastic differences between my life in America and my life in Germany. The German school system differs a bit given the hour gaps ââ¬â and sometimes longer between classes. Such gaps are called pauses in the school day, during which many students eat lunch or enjoy other small snacks. However, this does not affect the material taught. Students in Germany still learn math, science, English, German, and other subjects, such as art and music, as we do in the United States. Beyond superficial differences, such as food, fashion, and language, I do not see many differences between Germans and Americans. In Germany, I spent time with friends, as I do here in the United States. Teenagers had homework to do, or they would fail. Children dreamed of careers. Parents went off to work for the day. Some teenagers held part time jobs. Most students worked hard in school to prepare for their future. Coming back from my trip, I started to think, maybe people are more alike than different. Overall, we all like to be happy, and we all know people we care about. We all like to have a good time with others. Of course, everyone is not exactly alike. If this were the case, the world would be dull. Different cultures and traditions create unique individuals, but there are many similarities among people from all backgrounds. If people all over the world tried to understand each otherââ¬â¢s differences and customs, there is a possibility we would discover more similarities than differences among us. People and their cultures are like a quilt. Each fabric square represents a unique culture, but all the squares are stitched together to form an exquisite quilt. People from all over the world create this ensemble. While cultures all have their own customs in regard to food, music, and celebrations, a mutual interest keeps us all connected. Many of us share common goals, hobbies, and values that we are not aware of until we examine them. The fabric of individual cutlure gives variety to the world. Different textures and shapes beautify the world. The thread of life connects the ââ¬Å"squaresâ⬠and creates a dynamic world. Some people like to see our differences more than our similarities because of where we grew up and the customs we were brought up with. Of course, differences maintain diversity. However, if we discover common interests, we could all get along better because we will better understand each other. Therefore, instead of ripping the threads of the world apart, we should try to preserve the beautiful quilt we live on. We should embrace our differences and make connections to help us all understand each other. Also, let us look to add new fabric squares to our world quilt to make it more beautiful and more representative of the worldââ¬â¢s variety. Each ââ¬Å"squareâ⬠provides more stories and tales to add to an intricate quilt. Learning more about each other will help us discover what we share with others and help us form bonds. If it were not for my experiences abroad, I do not know if I would have fully understood the importance of recognizing the similarities between individual people and groups of people. We all have our own stories, experiences, cultures, families, and friends to contribute to this world. We could relate to one another if we just took the time to see the ways we are already connected.

Compare and contrast the aims and achievements of Mazzini an essays
Compare and contrast the aims and achievements of Mazzini an essays Compare and contrast the aims and achievements of Mazzini and Garibaldi Save this essay for later viewing Plagiarism and How to Cite The unification of Italy came about almost by accident. However, the process was reliant upon the actions of several key figures. Mazzini and Garibaldi were two of these key figures. Although the two men played essentially very different roles in the unification of Italy, they had much in common. During the course of this essay, the similarities and differences in the aims and achievements of Mazzini and Garibaldi will be examined. Mazzini was the first man to give a coherent and politically sound basis for Italian unification. After spending time as a member of the Carbonari, a secret society with little consistency in its aims and objectives, Mazzini founded Young Italy (Giovanni Italia). The essential goal of Young Italy was to achieve Italian unification through violent means. However, Mazzini was also a republican and believed that a united Italy must be a free and equal community of brothers; essentially it appears that Mazzini envisaged a socialist democratic republic. Mazzinis aims were inexorably linked in his own mind; he believed that Italy should not be unified under a constitutional Monarchy and that a constitutional Monarchy must only be a transitional phase. He believed that, through a process of revolution and education, Italy could be turned into a democratic socialist republic: Education must ever be directed to teach...the necessity of revolution. Revolution...must be so conducted as to render it a means of national education. The character of the revolution must be national...the flag raised, and the aim proposed will be national Although Mazzinis aims of violent revolution to create a unified republic of Italy were made clear to all 60,000 member...

Cause-and-effects Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Cause-and-effects - Essay Example When heated air from these surfaces begin to rise, it becomes absorbed by the clouds, which then condenses and turns into thunderclouds (Abbott 263). As the hot air rises, cooler air fills in the spaces that are left. The Earth, spinning on its axis, causes the air to spiral upwards, which causes the winds to rotate even faster. A hurricane has then been created, bringing with it strong winds that can reach up to two hundred miles per hour. A tornado is caused by a condition known as wind shear, which is when the speed or direction of wind changes with altitude. This can separate the updraft and downdraft of a thunderstorm, and if the wind shear is strong enough, it can cause horizontal vorticity (Abbott 239). Horizontal vorticity can be turned vertical by the updraft of the storm, which causes rotation. This rotation causes a tornado funnel to form, and thus a tornado. Tornadoes can produce winds up to three hundred and eighteen miles per hours, and they can cover group exceeding a mile at a time. These two weather conditions are capable of producing winds that can rip trees from the ground, toss vehicles, and tear homes from their foundations. They are both categorized based on size, wind speed, and level of destruction; while many people and buildings are able to survive Category One hurricanes or F2 tornadoes, the chances drastically decrease during a Category Five hurricane or an F5 tornado.

Comparison Papper Malcom x vs William Shakespeare Essay
Comparison Papper Malcom x vs William Shakespeare - Essay Example Both assailed calumny or manipulation which in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s speech from Brutus justified his murder and villainy by alleging that he killed Caesar because he is ambitious and that Rome he is better off with Caesar dead. This was in the passage; In Malcom Xââ¬â¢s speech however, this came from the gerrymandering of white (caucasian) politicians that when Negroes became concentrated in one area that is enough to become a political power, the political subdivisions are changed to disenfranchise the Negro. All sorts of effort were done to ââ¬Å"conâ⬠and undermine the negroââ¬â¢s right to vote as exegete it saying as ââ¬Å"senators and congressmen standing up filibustering and doing all other kinds of trickery to keep the Negro from being able to voteâ⬠. Both speakers were also addressing an undiscerning and unsophisticated crowd. In Malcolm X, the speech referred to the Negroes ââ¬Å"dumb vote, your ignorant vote, your wasted vote put in an administration in Washington, D.C., that has seen fit to pass every kind of legislation imaginableâ⬠while in Shakespeare, both Brutus and Anthony were addressing a mob who would agree to whatever they will say until Anthony won them over with a speech that effectively refuted Brutus speech that Caesar has to be killed because of his ambition; Both also justified violence or murder as a political solution. Albeit Brutus was more brutal because he personally slew Caesar under a shady motive even if Caesar is his close friend. Worst, he made it appear as if Caesar deserved it and his death is good for Rome by saying ââ¬Å"Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?â⬠Malcolm X speech however was replete of justification why it has to come to ballots or bullets. He argues that the eyes of the negroes are already open and his consciousness is already alive and he will

Lauching a Lebanese Beer Company Essay Example for Free
Lauching a Lebanese Beer Company Essay Introduction 961 Beer has a fascinating history which illustrates to aspiring entrepreneurs that with hard work and determination, even crazy business ideas are able to succeed. At a time when building were being destroyed and the city of Beirut, Lebanon was in shambles, the founders of 961 Beer decided to move forward with founding Lebanonââ¬â¢s first craft brewing company ââ¬â a surprising fact because this region of the world begin the tradition of brewing beer. As discussed below within the framework of a SWOT analysis, several factors contributed to the success of the company, and will play an integral part in the companyââ¬â¢s future as it expands to meet demand. SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis is meant to drive a company into meaningful action to capitalize on its strengths to seize opportunities as well as protect itself from outside threats or internal weaknesses. Strengths 961 Beer is fortunate in that it benefits from several internal strengths. Organizationally, the company is simplistic: with few employees and condensed management, the company is able to benefit from the strong direction of a select few. In addition, the few people involved, particularly Hajjar and Henrik, have a passion for food and drink and enjoy the process of providing high quality wine to their customers. In addition, with less ââ¬Å"baggageâ⬠the company is able to quickly innovate and adapt to changes in the customers tastes. Hajjar is also very passionate about food and wines of the region, leading to his dedication to the success of 961 Beer. He provides leadership that focuses more on the product itself, in order to ensure that it will be a beer that the Lebanese will be 1 proud off. As a recent CEO, Hajjar also appears to bring a substantial amount of capital to initially invest in the business. However, money runs out quickly, and now 961 Beer must pay for itself. The 961 Beer product line also has several strengths. The beer is of high quality because it was produced using only fresh ingredients and in small batches. The company is able to produce several new beer styles, and it heavily uses Lebanese products in brewing its beer. This gives 961 Beer a unique advantage over other beer options, and it attracts customers who are looking to try something new, all while support Lebanese products. Several areas of marketing also have specific strengths. 961 Beer was able to coin the catchphrase ââ¬Å"Are you resistant to change? â⬠which took off in a time when the country was suffering from the effects of war. ââ¬Å"Changeâ⬠is a simple idea that is very popular in a downtrodden country, and by associating itself with such a concept, 961 Beer is able to appeal to a large group of potential customers. To further this concept, the packaging is deliberately ââ¬Å"under-designedâ⬠and meant to be seen as simplistic, pure, and natural, which will attract customers interested in such aesthetic characteristics. The pub is also strategically placed in Beirutââ¬â¢s bustling nightlife scene. This helps to increase 931 Beer recognition and build brand loyalty among new customers. The pub also helps to provide as a gathering place for people to come and education themselves about the brewing process and try various types of beer. Weaknesses Like most entrepreneurs, 961 Beer was started by founders who had very little idea of what they were doing. By trial and error, Hajjar was able to brew batches of beer in his kitchen for several months until the beer began to improve. Although 2 Organizationally, the company is operating at capacity and is simply unable to produce any more for its additional customers. Also, it does not appear that 931 Beer is able to adequately predict how much demand is set to grow. Because the company is still new, there is little money for expensive advertising. This means that customers will be less mainstream, and more trendy, with the ability to follow the latest trends on the internet. Opportunities 961 Beer is the first craft beer in Lebanon in recent memory, even though Lebanon has a history in beer brewing. Education of customers leads to a fun, exciting experience that allows customers to ââ¬Å"experience changeâ⬠by trying more types of 961 Beer. This opportunity to provide a personal touch will give customers a lasting positive impression of 961 Beer. Personal interaction with customers allows the company to collect feedback on its beers and make adjustments. Customers are interested in supporting companies that heavily use Lebanese products. Particularly when the country is plagued by war, providing people the opportunity to work and be part of 931 Beer is a great way to create loyal customers. Advertising on social media is an effective way of reaching the younger, trendier crowd that is more along the lines of who is frequenting the bars and drinking on a regular basis. Threats Clearly, the colossal threat to the companyââ¬â¢s survival is the place of its headquarters. Lebanon is routinely in wartimes, and has been through several wars with neighboring countries ever since 961 Beer began in 2006. Unfortunately, visitor levels to the 961 Bar decrease when conflict increases, which makes sales plummet. The competitive environment is monopolistic. The local beer market was monopolized by Almaza, which was acquired in 2002 by Heineken. In total, Heineken 3 controlled about 70% of the local beer market at the time 961 Beer was founded. With so much power, Heineken has pricing power that 961 Beer cannot match. Other bars became more reluctant to sell 961 Beer because the bar was seen as a threat to their own business. 961 Beer will need to befriend these bars and show them that the bars can enjoy more success by joining 961 rather than going against them. Many customers are not accustomed to drinking anything besides commercially processed, mass-produced beer from large competitors. This means that 961 Beer must educate their customers about the different types of beers and convince them to try 961 Beer. Evaluation Plan: Expand outside of Lebanon Based on the analysis performed above, it is clear that 961 Beer must expand out of Beirut, Lebanon in order to remain successful. While this will increase the risk of lesser quality or require the use of non-Lebonese products, expansion is required to ensure the companyââ¬â¢s long-term success. Several steps must be taken before the expansion, all while 961 Beer continues to grow business in Beirut and manage bar operations. First, 961 Beer must address its capacity issues. 961 Beer seems to have had some difficulty in predicting the amount of beer it needs to brew in order to meet the growing demand. An analysis of their books will be helpful to garner a better idea of what demand will look like in the future, accounting for their companyââ¬â¢s growth rate. Next, 961 Beer needs to establish relationships with businesses in neighboring cities and countries. Bottling and shipping beer from Lebanon is unrealistic with high likelihood of war, so 961 Beer will need to establish microbreweries within these other locations. Quality can still be maintained by ensuring that Lebanese ingredients are still used in the brew, but costs can be recuperated by charging customers in those 4 countries a higher premium for the same beer. Finally, 961 Beer needs to join international beer festivals in other countries in order to garner worldwide interest and to further increase recognition and demand among worldwide customers. There are several major risks that could undermine this plan for expansion. Clearly, the largest threat to 961 Beer is the ongoing threat of war in Lebanon and neighboring countries. Unfortunately, there is little to nothing that can be done to stop this threat. Without expanding into other countries, a war in Lebanon could wipe out the entire company. However, as discussed above, 961 Beer can minimize this risk by establishing separate microbreweries in other countries so that there is no single source where 961 Beer is brewed. Nonetheless, establishing other microbreweries increases another risk: the risk of uneven and unequal quality. 961 Beer can lessen this risk by brewing its ââ¬Å"brewmasterââ¬â¢s selectâ⬠along with seasonal beers to appeal to customers in the new countries. 5.

College Admissions Essay: Help the Little Children :: College Admissions Essays
Help the Little Children à "I believe the children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside." These are the words of the well-known singer, Whitney Houston. They are words that I truly intend to live by. My greatest reason for wanting to further my education is to be able to teach and help the children. à See, I come from a small community in Mississippi called Fitler. Many people have not even heard of it. In this community there is nothing positive to motivate or encourage the children to get involved in meaningful goals. One would think that there wouldn't be any problems in a community of roughly 200 people, which is only growing because of teenage pregnancies. I heard a woman from the state's capital make the statement that "the people in this area are either overweight, Christians, or pregnant because all they have to do is eat, go to church, and have sex." As harsh as that sounds, I agree. They are in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing. These children have to ride the bus for one and one-half-hours just to get to school. à I believe that if there were more activities, organizations, encouragement, and motivation, and if they had someone to teach them the importance of an education and the values of life, many of their problems would cease. Therefore, with my education, I will enrich the lives of these children. First, I will start a 4-H Club. I will also organize a Big Brother and Big Sister Youth Group, build playgrounds, and start little league athletic departments. I will build a Youth Center with a library, video arcade, and skating rink. The center will also offer classes in Biblical education, computer education, and tutoring for all grade levels. I will hire advisors to come in biweekly for ACT Preparation courses and courses on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. There will be two guidance counselors available at all times and I will provide a way for the older children to earn money. I even have plans for building a school in closer proximity to the students. à I'm constantly realizing that everyone is not as blessed as I am. Assess the Role of Faith in Supporting Religious Belief Essay
In 1877, William Kingdon Clifford propositioned in his book ââ¬Å"Ethics and Beliefâ⬠that belief in something without sufficient evidence is irrational. Whilst he accepted that in many beliefs there is often an epistemic gap between the evidence and the conclusion (inductive reasoning) he did also claim that ââ¬Å"It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence.â⬠Furthermore he claimed that that tolerating credulity (a tendency to believe readily) and superstition will damage ultimately society. He concurred with David Hume (1711-76) when he said ââ¬Å"All wise men proportion their belief to the evidence.â⬠This stance ââ¬â that belief without sufficient evidence is irrational ââ¬â is called evidentialism, and is adopted by many atheists (including Clifford and Hume) in their view of theology. However, natural theology instead attempts to meet evidentialism on its own terms by trying to show that belief in God is actually rational. It draws collectively upon all of the a posteriori arguments for Godââ¬â¢s existence including the teleological, cosmological, moral and experiential arguments. However, it is rare that an atheist will be convinced by the evidence of these arguments anywhere beyond the point of agnosticism. It is generally accepted that belief in God requires some element of seemingly irrational faith. Indeed, the stance of fideism states that reason plays no part in belief. ââ¬Å"Whoever attempts to demonstrate the existence of Godâ⬠¦is an excellent subject for a comedy of higher lunacy.â⬠ââ¬â Soren Kierkegaard. Moderate fideists suggest that reason can actually be destructive to oneââ¬â¢s faith. They claim that reason leads to arrogance by encouraging the idea that human reason alone will suffice and that God unnecessary for moral or spiritual direction. Whilst moderate theists view reason as a barrier to true faith however, (thus disregarding natural theology as irrelevant) extreme theists go so far as to agree with Tertullian when he said (AD 155-222) ââ¬Å"Credo quia absurdum est.â⬠or ââ¬Å"I believe because it is absurd.â⬠Aquinas (1225-74) claimed that there were two ways in which to know God. The first is through natural theology, including his five a posteriori proofs constructed by human reason. The second is through ââ¬Å"revealed theologyâ⬠which cannot be found by human reason alone, but must involve divine intervention or revelation. The acceptance of these revealed truths requires faith, and this is fundamental to the Christian religion. For example, only faith can reveal the truth behind the statement ââ¬Å"God is the father, the son and the Holy Ghostâ⬠or that ââ¬Å"the bread of communion is the body of Christâ⬠. Thus revelation provides us with a body of truths, which must be taken on faith alone. Aquinas claims that faith is a combination of reason and opinion. It involves reason since it is propositional i.e. claims certain beliefs to be true and therefore similar to scientific knowledge. On the other hand these truths cannot be proved, and so involve an epistemic gap. It is this epistemic gap that makes faith a matter of opinion and so allows humanity free will over their belief. The stance that it is our choice whether or not to take a leap of faith was also held by Soren Kierkegaard (1812-1855). Alvin Plantinga (1932-) proposed that the classical foundationalism upon which evidentialism is based is flawed. Foundationalist beliefs are described by Plantinga as ââ¬Å"the starting points for thoughtâ⬠and he summarises their definition as: ââ¬Å"I am entitled to believe X without any evidence if and only if it is self-evident, incorrigible or certain to me in some wayâ⬠. He argues that this is flawed, since this statement is itself neither self-evident, incorrigible nor is it certain in some way. It appears therefore that foundationalism defines itself as irrational. He also states that there are many beliefs that can be held rationally, but that do not fall under the foundationalist criteria or that can be justified contingently. For example, the trust we have in our memory, or the belief that other people have minds of their own. Plantinga argues that we must ultimately reject classical foundationalism on the grounds that it is incoherent, and also because it rejects many beliefs that common sense tells us to be properly basic. He propositions that his reformed epistemology should take the place of classical foundationalism, and because of this: ââ¬Å"It is entirely right, rational, reasonable and proper to believe in God without any evidence at all.â⬠A theist might claim that it just appears obvious to them that God exists, and for Plantinga this is good enough. However, surely this would mean that anything we like can be a properly basic belief? Could a childââ¬â¢s belief in Santa Clause not be defined as properly basic? Plantinga would respond by saying that it is the beliefs directly connected to Godââ¬â¢s existence that are properly basic, rather than the belief in Godââ¬â¢s existence itself. For example, the guilt felt after committing a bad deed or the sense that something must have cre ated and designed the universe. Blaisà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ Pascal (1623-1662) deemed that it was reasonable to have faith in God by a sheer act of will, so certain was he that he put forward a wager: ââ¬Å"Let us weigh the gain and loss in wagering that God is (exists)â⬠¦If you gain, you gain all, if you lose, you lose nothing.â⬠By this, he meant that the theist stands the chance of gaining entrance to heaven at the risk of nothing, whilst the atheist however risks damnation to hell. However, surely this basis of self-gain is at odds with the teachings of the Christian church? W.K.Clifford suggested that God would deny heaven to those who followed Pascalââ¬â¢s wager on the basis that faith should be founded upon trust and morality, not self gain. Pascal might have responded that true belief would arise from the habit of religion i.e. baptism, mass, prayer etc. However, this is contradicted somewhat by his opinion that oneââ¬â¢s relationship with God should be somewhat deeper. ââ¬Å"It is the heart which pe rceives God and not reason.â⬠Furthermore, Pascalââ¬â¢s definition of faith appears to ignore the recognition of Godââ¬â¢s immanence and His affect on our everyday lives. William James (1842-1910) found Pascalââ¬â¢s proposition that we can change our beliefs by an act of will entirely ridiculous. He claimed solidly that our beliefs are contingent i.e. each new belief is connected to the previous one. He does agree however that it is rational to sustain a belief even without sufficient evidence given certain circumstances. The first circumstance is where the evidence is indeterminate between two beliefs i.e. favours neither option. The second circumstance is if we are faced with a genuine option i.e. one that is living, forced and momentous. By living James means one that is a reality, as opposed to a dead option, that whilst theoretically possible, isnââ¬â¢t actually going to happen e.g. a devout Catholic supporting the gay pride movement. A forced option is one that cannot be avoided, e.g. choosing whether to go to school or to have a lie in when your alarm goes off at 7:30. A momentous option is one that is unique and irreversible e.g. joining the army ââ¬â as opposed to a trivial option which is reversible and one that happens regularly throughout life. James states that it is therefore sometimes rational to believe in God without sufficient evidence if the choice is a genuine option. He disputes Pascalââ¬â¢s wager as necessarily being a genuine option as it is not necessarily forced (one could deny the possibility of going to hell) nor is it necessarily living (one might be a devout follower of a different religion). However, he does accept that for a person who perceives the evidence as indeterminate and is already open to belief in God, Pascalââ¬â¢s wager might succeed in tipping the scales and getting them to make that leap of faith. James does believe however that faith can in some instances be a genuine option, and a decision that involves seizing the opportunity and taking a risk. He states that when faced with a genuine option and without sufficient evidence, making a decision will then reveal the evidence to us. For example, one cannot be sure of a strangerââ¬â¢s kindness until they have decided to trust the stranger and give them a chance. Similarly, by making a leap of faith in God, the definitive truth will be later revealed by eschatological verification. However, natural theologians such as Aquinas would certainly dispute Jamesââ¬â¢ claim that the evidence is indeterminate, for the cosmological, teleological, moral and experiential arguments ââ¬â whilst inconclusive ââ¬â can be extremely persuasive. Furthermore, like Pascal, he seems to ignore faith as an acceptation of Godââ¬â¢s immanence and active presence in our lives. The version of faith held by Aquinas, Plantinga, Pascal and James is propositional in that they all claim that faith about believes in Godââ¬â¢s objective existence. However, faith can also be seen existentially as an attitude incorporating God subjectively into the believerââ¬â¢s life. For instance, when I say ââ¬Å"I believe that murder is wrongâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I believe in free speechâ⬠I am not stating anything about existence, but rather about my commitment towards certain values. H.H.Price (1899-1985) claimed that the statement ââ¬Å"I believe in Godâ⬠is similar to this in that it is a way of perceiving the world using certain values. ââ¬Å"to see oneself as a created, dependent creature, receiving life and well being from a higher sourceâ⬠¦the only appropriate attitude is one of grateful worship and obedience.â⬠ââ¬â John Hick. To conclude; each of the arguments examined above vary in their relationship with reason, but what they all have in common is that faith is central to the believer and must work independently of reason to some degree. Some of the arguments incorporate reason, some reject it entirely, but the transcendent nature of God can never be proved, can never be indubitable, for faith is an integral part of religion. Perhaps then natural theology is not trying to prove Godââ¬â¢s existence to the point where faith is cast out and certainty resides in its place, but rather it is merely trying to explore Godââ¬â¢s nature. ââ¬Å"I do not seek to understand so that I may believe, but I believe in order to understandâ⬠ââ¬â St. Anselm (1033-1109) Proslogian 1. Natural theology could therefore be seen as an expression of faith, rather than a foundation for it. The majority of theists argue that faith is necessary, for if God proved himself to us, we would no longer have free will over our belief and so would be robots without dignity. On the other hand, surely God in His omnipotence could find some way of maintaining our freedom whilst simultaneously providing us certainty of his love? Why not give certainty to the millions of His helpless and suffering children who have lost faith; for where is their dignity?

Essay on The Character of Macbeth from Macbeth - 1960 Words
Macbeth from Macbeth In William Shakespeares tragedy Macbeth we find a guilt and fear-ridden usurper of the throne of Scotland. Let us study this character in this essay. A.C. Bradley in Shakespearean Tragedy paints a portrait of Macbeth: Macbeth, the cousin of a King mild, just, and beloved, but now too old to lead his army, is introduced to us as a general of extraordinary prowess, who has covered himself with glory in putting down a rebellion and repelling the invasion of a foreign army. In these conflicts he showed great personal courage, a quality which he continues to display throughout the drama in regard to all plain dangers.
